IPv6 basics: address an interface

Enable IPv6 routing globally on R1. Then bring up Gi0/0 and assign it the global unicast address 2001:db8::1/64.

Topology

Objectives

Hint 1, order

Enable ipv6 unicast-routing globally BEFORE adding addresses. Otherwise the router treats itself as a host, not a forwarder.

Hint 2, full sequence

enable
configure terminal
 ipv6 unicast-routing
 interface gi0/0
  no shutdown
  ipv6 address 2001:db8::1/64
  end

Bonus, EUI-64 form (blueprint 1.8)

Instead of typing the host portion, let the router derive it from the interface identifier. Same lab, different last step:

  ipv6 address 2001:db8::/64 eui-64

The /64 is the prefix; the last 64 bits get computed from the interface. Confirm with show ipv6 interface brief.
